Low-tyramine foods you can actually eat

Tyramine is what time does to protein. Fresh food is low in it, which leaves more on the menu than the avoid lists suggest.

Tyramine lists frighten people the way histamine lists do. Read one and it looks like a catalogue of forbidden foods. Most of it describes what happens to food over time.

Ageing, fermenting, curing and simply sitting around all raise tyramine. The fresh version of almost any food is low, which leaves a great deal you can eat.

Below is what our database grades low, drawn from the same data as our tyramine-rich foods list.

Why fresh food is low in tyramine

Tyramine forms when bacteria break down tyrosine, an amino acid in protein-rich food. Nothing has to go wrong for this to happen; it is ordinary bacterial activity and it starts as soon as food is stored.

That is why the same steak is low on the day you buy it and higher after three days in the fridge. The same cheese is low as fresh mozzarella and high as aged cheddar. The same cabbage is low raw and high as sauerkraut.

Whole categories of food stay on the menu. What decides their tyramine is how you store and prepare them.

The foods you can eat freely

These are the everyday low-tyramine ingredients.

Storage habits that keep tyramine low

Buy fresh and cook it soon. A low-tyramine diet is mostly a storage discipline. Meat and fish bought today and cooked today are low whatever the label says.

Freeze what you will not eat today. Freezing halts the bacterial activity that produces tyramine. Three days in the fridge does not. If you batch cook, freeze the portions straight away.

Be careful with leftovers. This is where most people on a strict diet slip. A meal that was fine on Monday carries more tyramine by Wednesday.

Watch the fermented things that do not look fermented. Soy sauce, fish sauce, miso, and most bottled sauces built on them carry a lot, and they arrive in food that is otherwise fresh.

How to use this list

For migraine, tyramine is one trigger among several, and it accumulates as a load. The same aged cheese can be fine on a well-slept day and a problem on a stressful one.

A practical approach is four weeks on the low list, keeping the rest of your life as steady as you can, then reintroducing one food at a time with several days between. Tyramine headaches typically arrive within a few hours to a day, which is long enough to lose the connection without a written record.

For anyone on an MAOI antidepressant, none of that applies. There the diet carries medical weight and your prescriber's list is the one that counts, because tyramine that would pass unnoticed otherwise can drive a sharp rise in blood pressure.1

Check any food in seconds

The tyramine checker grades any food in our database, and every food on this page links to its own page with its histamine load alongside.

Where Triggerbites fits in

This list comes from the food data inside Triggerbites. The app grades every ingredient for tyramine alongside histamine, its liberators, allergens, FODMAPs and more.

Storage decides tyramine as much as shopping does, and storage is the part people forget when they reconstruct a week from memory. You type or say your day as it happens: "leftover chilli from Sunday and a Coke Zero for lunch, fresh salmon for dinner, a glass of red, headache by the next afternoon". The word "leftover" is in your own entry, so it is in the record.

Triggerbites pulls out the ingredients and lines them up against your headaches, including the ones that arrive a day later, with your sleep and stress in the same diary. You can export the record as a PDF for your doctor.

Common questions

What foods are lowest in tyramine?

Fresh meat, fish and poultry cooked the day you buy them, eggs, milk and fresh cheeses like ricotta and cottage cheese, most fresh fruit and vegetables, and grains. Freshness matters more than the food itself.

Can I eat cheese on a low-tyramine diet?

Fresh, unaged cheeses are fine. Ricotta, cottage cheese, cream cheese and fresh mozzarella carry very little, because tyramine forms during ageing. Cheddar, parmesan and blue cheese are the ones to avoid.

How long can leftovers sit?

Tyramine keeps forming while food sits, so the same dish carries more on day three than on day one. If you are managing tyramine, cool food quickly, refrigerate within the hour, and eat or freeze it within a day.

Does freezing stop tyramine forming?

Largely, yes. Freezing halts the bacterial activity that produces it, so freezing leftovers immediately is far better than refrigerating them for days. Once you thaw something, eat it the same day.

Is a low-tyramine diet different on MAOI medication?

Completely. For migraine, tyramine is one possible trigger among many and the diet is a matter of personal threshold. On an MAOI antidepressant, a high-tyramine meal can cause a dangerous blood pressure rise, so avoidance is a medical requirement and your prescriber's list is the one to follow.

Are bananas high in tyramine?

Ripe banana flesh is low. Overripe bananas carry more, and banana peel carries a great deal, which is where the old warnings come from. A normally ripe banana eaten as you would eat it is fine for most people.

Live, love, log. 🧡
