Overview

About Mango

Mango is one of the biggest fructose hits in the fruit aisle: it rates high in excess fructose and high FODMAP, so even half a cheek can leave a sensitive gut bloated, gassy or running to the bathroom.

That deep tropical sweetness is largely free fructose, the FODMAP that outpaces glucose and ferments in the gut. The upside is that mango is strongly anti-inflammatory and low in histamine, so if fruit normally gives you skin or headache symptoms, the trouble with mango is almost entirely the sugar rather than the fruit chemistry.

How Mango scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in excess fructose, the single most common reason mango causes bloating, wind and loose stools; a small piece is far safer than a whole cheek
  • High FODMAP overall, so it is better shared alongside a low FODMAP fruit than eaten as the whole snack
  • Low in histamine and only mild on salicylates, so mango is an unlikely cause if your fruit reactions are skin flushing or headaches

FAQ

Common questions about Mango

Why does mango give me diarrhoea or bloating?

Mango is very high in excess fructose. When you eat more fructose than glucose, the surplus is not fully absorbed and draws water into the bowel while fermenting, which produces gas, cramping and loose stools. Cutting the portion down, rather than avoiding mango completely, is usually enough.

Is mango low FODMAP?

No, mango is high FODMAP because of its excess fructose, and it is one of the fruits most likely to trigger IBS symptoms. A small serving may be tolerated, but a whole mango is a heavy fructose load for a sensitive gut.

Is mango high in histamine or salicylates?

No. Mango is low in histamine and only mild on salicylates, and it is actually anti-inflammatory. If you react to it, the culprit is far more likely the fructose than a histamine or salicylate response, which sets it apart from fruit like strawberry.
