Overview

About mint leaves

Fresh mint leaves are the ones you tear over salads, muddle into drinks and tea, or stir through yoghurt, peas and tabbouleh.

They grade moderate on salicylates and are a mild histamine liberator, so a leaf or two as garnish is minor, while a packed handful muddled into cocktails or blended into a big bowl of tabbouleh is a much bigger dose. Mint is low FODMAP as a leaf, and peppermint has a separate, helpful reputation for calming IBS-type gut spasms, which is why the two often get discussed together.

How mint leaves scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • Moderate salicylate and a mild histamine liberator, so a muddled-mint drink or a herb-heavy salad is a larger dose than a single garnish sprig.
  • Peppermint oil is used to relax gut muscle in IBS, but that is the concentrated oil, not a handful of fresh leaves, so do not confuse the two.
  • Low FODMAP as a leaf, so gut fermentation is not the issue here; salicylate load is the thing to watch if you react.

FAQ

Common questions about mint leaves

Are fresh mint leaves high in salicylates?

They are moderate. A sprig as garnish is a small amount, but mint muddled into drinks or piled into tabbouleh and salads adds up fast. If you are salicylate-sensitive, treat a herb-heavy dish differently from a single garnish leaf.

Is mint good or bad for IBS?

Both stories are true for different forms. Fresh mint leaves are low FODMAP and fine for most IBS diets, and peppermint oil (the concentrated extract, not the leaf) is actually used to relax gut spasms. The leaf is a flavour, the oil is closer to a remedy.

Is fresh mint high in histamine?

Mint is low in histamine itself but grades as a mild histamine liberator, meaning large amounts can nudge your body to release its own histamine. A garnish is trivial; a muddled, mint-heavy drink is where a sensitive person might notice it.
