About Soursop
Soursop is the fruit the Annonaceae safety research is actually about.
The other custard apples in this journal carry the family caution by association; soursop carries it directly. Annona muricata is the species named in the Guadeloupe case-control work that found an unusually high local rate of an atypical, levodopa-resistant parkinsonism among people who had eaten the fruit and drunk infusions of its leaves habitually for years, and annonacin, the mitochondrial complex I inhibitor identified as the likely mechanism, has been measured in soursop pulp and in canned soursop nectar rather than only in the seeds. One published estimate put the annonacin in a single fruit or one can of nectar at roughly a milligram per kilogram of body weight, many times the intravenous dose that produced brain lesions in rats. That is an animal comparison across a different route of administration and it is not evidence that an occasional guanabana ice cream harms anyone, but it is the reason soursop is the one Annona where the daily-habit question genuinely matters, and why a mug of graviola leaf tea every morning is a different proposition from a fruit in July. Read the trigger grades on this page with open scepticism: soursop shares its entire grade row byte for byte with unrelated seed entries, so every column here, the FODMAP ones included, is untested rather than measured.

- Leaf tea is the heavier exposure, not the fruit. The Guadeloupe research covered soursop leaf and bark infusions as well as the fruit, and acetogenins concentrate in the leaf. There is no established safe daily amount of graviola tea, and it is the format most often drunk deliberately, every day, for months
- Graviola capsules, tinctures and concentrated extracts are sold widely as a cancer treatment. No completed human trial supports that claim, graviola appears on the US Food and Drug Administration list of fake cancer cures, and regulators have repeatedly acted against sellers who market it that way. An extract also delivers a far larger and more concentrated acetogenin dose than eating the fruit does
- The large black seeds are not food and must be removed before the pulp goes anywhere near a blender. Soursop is usually eaten as juice, nectar, sorbet or a smoothie, which makes this a live risk rather than a theoretical one. Crushed Annona seed has a long history as an insecticide and lice treatment and is a severe eye irritant
- The grade row on this page is a placeholder. It is identical to rows for foods soursop has nothing in common with, so the B for histamine and the C grades for salicylate and oxalate are not measurements of soursop and should not be used to clear or convict it. Its FODMAP columns are unrated

Common questions about Soursop
Is soursop safe to eat?
Eating the fruit occasionally is a different question from the one the research is asking. The Guadeloupe studies looked at people with a lifetime of near-daily consumption of Annona muricata fruit and leaf infusions, and the association they found was with that pattern, not with a dessert on holiday. Nobody has established a threshold, so the honest position is that soursop is not a fruit to build a daily habit around, that leaf teas and supplements are the formats to be most careful with, and that the seeds should never be crushed or blended. If you want a rule you can act on: enjoy it as a treat, keep it away from the everyday rotation, and do not take graviola in capsule form.
Does soursop cause Parkinson’s disease?
Not classic Parkinson’s disease, and not from an occasional fruit. What the research describes is an atypical parkinsonism that responds poorly to levodopa and was found at unusually high rates in Guadeloupe, where a case-control study linked it to habitual consumption of Annona muricata fruit and of teas brewed from its leaves. Annonacin, a compound the genus produces, blocks mitochondrial complex I and kills dopaminergic neurons in laboratory models, which supplies a plausible mechanism. The association is not proof of causation and it has not been reproduced everywhere soursop is eaten. Soursop is nonetheless the Annona with the strongest published signal, so it is treated more cautiously here than cherimoya, atemoya or pawpaw.
Is soursop or graviola tea safe to drink every day?
Daily is exactly the pattern the research question is about, so it is the one use worth avoiding. Leaves concentrate annonaceous acetogenins, an infusion extracts them, and the Guadeloupe exposure included leaf and bark teas alongside the fruit. There is no published safe daily dose. If you drink soursop leaf tea for a health reason, that reason is almost certainly better served by something without an open neurotoxicity question attached to it.
Does graviola cure cancer?
No. Annonaceous acetogenins kill cancer cells in a dish, which is where the whole marketing story comes from, but killing cells in a dish is not a treatment and no completed human trial has shown that graviola treats cancer in people. The US Food and Drug Administration includes graviola in its published list of fake cancer cures and has issued warning letters to companies selling it with those claims. The additional problem specific to supplements is dose: a concentrated extract taken daily delivers far more acetogenin than the fruit ever would, which is the wrong direction to be moving given the neurotoxicity work on this genus.
Is soursop high in histamine or low FODMAP?
We cannot tell you from this data and would rather say so than guess. The grade row we hold for soursop is a duplicated placeholder shared with unrelated entries, and its FODMAP, fructan, fructose and polyol columns are all unrated. What can be said generally is that soursop is a sweet, acidic, sugar-dense tropical fruit, that fresh ripe fruit is not a recognised high-histamine food, and that the fermented or over-soft flesh sometimes used for juice is a different matter if amines are your trigger. If you are tracking a gut reaction, log the portion and the format, because most soursop is consumed as sweetened nectar and the added sugar in a carton is not the fruit.
