Overview

About Hummus

Hummus is a double FODMAP hit: the chickpea base is high in galacto-oligosaccharides and the garlic adds fructans on top, which makes it a classic bloating trigger even though it looks like a plain, healthy dip.

The tahini brings sesame into the mix as well, so hummus is worth flagging if you are managing a sesame allergy. A couple of tablespoons is usually tolerated, while loading a plate is where the gas tends to start.

How Hummus scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in galacto-oligosaccharides from the chickpeas, one of the main FODMAPs behind bean-related bloating and wind
  • Garlic adds fructans, so hummus stacks two different FODMAPs in one dip and tips high FODMAP quickly
  • Made with tahini, which is sesame paste, a top allergen to watch if sesame is one of your triggers
  • Portion matters: a small scoop can be fine while a heaped plate reliably brings on gas in sensitive guts

FAQ

Common questions about Hummus

Why does hummus make me bloated and gassy?

Hummus combines two FODMAPs. The chickpeas are high in galacto-oligosaccharides and the garlic adds fructans, and both are fermented by gut bacteria to produce gas. That double load is why hummus bloats many people even when they tolerate other dips.

Is hummus low FODMAP?

A small serve of about two tablespoons can be low FODMAP, but the amount most people actually eat is high because of the chickpea GOS and garlic fructans. If you want a dip you can pile on, white miso whisked with a little oil, vegan mayonnaise or mustard are lower-FODMAP options.

Does hummus contain sesame?

Yes. Traditional hummus is made with tahini, which is ground sesame seeds, so it is not safe if you have a sesame allergy. Some brands vary the amount, but you should assume any standard hummus contains sesame unless the label clearly says otherwise.
