Overview
About Angel hair pasta
Angel hair, or capellini, is the finest strand of wheat pasta, delicate enough to cook in a couple of minutes.
Thin as it is, it is still durum wheat, so it is high in gluten and high in fructans and rated high FODMAP. The slim strands do not make it any safer than spaghetti: it triggers the same gluten reactions and the same fructan-driven bloating and gas.

How Angel hair pasta scores
Watch for
What trips people up
- High in gluten like all wheat pasta, so it is unsafe for celiac disease or gluten sensitivity
- High in fructans and high FODMAP, which commonly brings on bloating and gas
- The thin shape absorbs sauce fast but changes nothing about the gluten or fructan content

FAQ
Common questions about Angel hair pasta
Is angel hair pasta gluten-free?
Standard angel hair is durum wheat, so it contains gluten and is not gluten-free. Thin rice noodles cook just as quickly and are naturally gluten-free, or reach for a certified gluten-free pasta.
Is thin pasta like capellini easier on the gut than regular pasta?
No. The strand thickness has no effect on the fructans that cause FODMAP bloating; angel hair is high in fructans just like spaghetti or penne. If pasta bloats you, a low FODMAP option such as rice noodles is the change that helps, not a thinner wheat shape.
