Wheat bran is the outer layer of the wheat kernel, and concentrating that layer concentrates its triggers.
It is a gluten food that is also one of the most fructan-dense ingredients in the pantry and unusually high in nickel, which is why a spoonful of bran cereal or a "high-fibre" muffin can bloat you far more than the same amount of regular flour.

Wheat bran is the concentrated outer husk of the grain, so it packs far more fructans per gram than refined white flour. Fructans are a FODMAP that ferment in the gut, and the higher dose in bran means more gas and bloating from the same small serving.
Is wheat bran high in nickel?
Yes. The bran and germ layers of whole grains hold most of the nickel, so wheat bran is one of the higher-nickel cereal foods. If you have systemic nickel allergy, bran cereals and bran muffins are worth watching, whereas refined grains like white rice are much lower.
Is wheat bran gluten-free?
