Overview
About Brandy
Brandy is a spirit distilled from wine, so it begins as fermented grapes and is then concentrated in the still and usually aged in oak.
Distillation makes it gluten-free and removes most of the histamine that sat in the original wine, but the alcohol still counts: brandy is graded a strong histamine liberator, so flushing, a runny nose or a headache can follow a small glass. Because the base is grape rather than neutral grain, its tyramine, sulfite and salicylate load sits in the borderline range, a touch more wine-like than a plain grain spirit.

Watch for
What trips people up
- Strong histamine liberator from the alcohol itself, so it can set off flushing and headaches even though distilling removes most of the histamine the base wine carried.
- Made from grapes and distilled, so it is gluten-free while keeping faint borderline traces of the wine style sulfites and tyramine.
- Graded pro-inflammatory and hard on SIBO; the residual sugar in sweeter or fruit brandies adds to that.
- Borderline on salicylates and tyramine: usually minor, but relevant if you are sensitive and pairing it with aged cheese or cured meat.

FAQ
Common questions about Brandy
Is brandy high in histamine?
The brandy itself is low in histamine, because distillation removes most of what the base wine contained. What makes it a problem for histamine-sensitive people is that alcohol is a histamine liberator: it releases your own stored histamine and slows the DAO enzyme that clears it, so you can still get flushing or a headache from a small pour.
Is brandy gluten-free?
Yes. Even when a spirit is made from grain, distillation leaves gluten behind, and brandy is distilled from wine (grapes) to begin with, so it is gluten-free. Check the label only on flavored or spiced brandies, which may add other ingredients after distilling.
Is brandy better or worse than wine for histamine?
Brandy has less preformed histamine than wine, because the still removes most of it, so glass for glass it delivers less histamine. But it is much stronger alcohol, and the liberator and DAO-blocking effect scales with how much ethanol you drink, so a large measure can hit as hard as a glass of wine.
