About Glucose
Glucose, which appears on most ingredient lists as dextrose, is the rare sweetener that grades A on every trigger column we track: total FODMAPs, fructans, GOS, excess fructose, polyols, lactose, gluten, histamine content, histamine liberation, salicylates, oxalates, nickel, sulfites, nitrites, glutamates, tyramine, caffeine, dairy protein and SIBO fermentability. That is structural, not luck. Table sugar is sucrose, half glucose and half fructose. Honey, agave and high fructose corn syrup carry fructose in excess of glucose, and that excess is the precise condition that saturates GLUT5 transport in the small intestine and produces the bloating, wind and loose stools of fructose malabsorption. Glucose has no fructose half to malabsorb. It is taken up actively and almost completely in the small intestine, so it does not reach the colon to ferment, which is why its SIBO grade is A rather than the E that most liquid sweeteners carry. It goes further than merely neutral: glucose eaten alongside fructose actively improves fructose uptake, which is why the FODMAP rule is written as "fructose in excess of glucose" and why balanced-sugar fruit is tolerated when honey is not. The honest caveat is metabolic rather than digestive. Glucose is refined sugar with the fastest blood-sugar response of the common sweeteners, graded D for anti-inflammatory eating and D against DASH and Mediterranean patterns.

Is glucose low FODMAP?
Yes, at A. Glucose is a single monosaccharide absorbed actively in the small intestine, so it is not a short-chain fermentable carbohydrate at all. It carries no fructans, no GOS, no polyols, no lactose and no excess fructose, which makes it one of the few sweeteners with nothing in the FODMAP category to restrict.
Is dextrose the same as glucose?
Yes. Dextrose is the name used on food labels for D-glucose, the naturally occurring form, and it is usually produced by breaking down corn or wheat starch. The source starch is fully hydrolysed, so dextrose grades A for gluten regardless of which grain it came from.
Does glucose help with fructose malabsorption?
It does. Fructose crosses the gut wall slowly on its own via GLUT5, but glucose present at the same time speeds that transfer, which is why fructose is only counted as a problem when it exceeds the glucose alongside it. Practically, that is why sucrose-sweetened food is often tolerated when honey or agave is not, and why glucose is a useful sweetener to substitute in.
Is glucose safe for histamine intolerance?
Yes on the data we hold. Glucose grades A for histamine content and A for histamine liberation, so it neither carries histamine nor prompts your own mast cells to release it. It is also A for tyramine, sulfites and glutamates, the additives that most often ride along with sweetened products and confuse a histamine log.
