Overview

About Breadnut seeds

Breadnut seeds are the large starchy seeds of Artocarpus camansi, boiled or roasted and eaten like chestnuts across the Caribbean, the Philippines and the Pacific.

On the chemical triggers they are quiet: graded clean on histamine, histamine liberation, tyramine, gluten, lactose, sulfites and glutamates. The two things worth knowing are that the raw seed carries trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinins (graded C on lectins) which cooking destroys, and that nobody has ever lab-tested this seed for FODMAPs, so if you are asking whether breadnut seeds are low FODMAP the honest answer is that it is unrated and you have to test your own portion.

Watch for

What trips people up

  • Raw seeds are not food. They carry trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinins (lectins), and processing studies show boiling eliminates both and gives the most digestible seed. The C lectin grade describes the raw seed, not the boiled one.
  • FODMAP content is unrated, not low. This seed has never gone through Monash testing, and it is graded C for fermentation potential, so a big bowl of starchy seeds is a plausible bloating trigger even though no single FODMAP is flagged.
  • Salicylate, oxalate and nickel are all unrated here too, so treat a reaction as unexplained rather than ruled out, and log the portion you ate.
  • Undercooking is the usual culprit. Seeds boiled briefly and finished on a grill can still be firm in the middle, which is where the antinutrients survive.

FAQ

Common questions about Breadnut seeds

Do breadnut seeds have to be cooked?

Yes. The raw seed contains trypsin inhibitors and haemagglutinins, and processing research on Artocarpus seed flour found cooking eliminated both completely while boiled samples came out the most digestible of any preparation. Boil until a seed crushes easily between finger and thumb, then roast or fry if you want the colour. Never taste them raw to check seasoning.

Are breadnut seeds low FODMAP?

Unknown. They are unrated across every FODMAP subgroup because they have not been lab-tested, so no honest low FODMAP claim exists for them. What we can say is that they are a dense starchy seed graded C on fermentation potential, which is the profile that tends to reward small portions. Start with two or three seeds, log the result, and build up only if nothing happens.

Are breadnut seeds a tree nut?

Botanically no. Despite the name they come from a breadfruit relative in the fig and mulberry family, not from the walnut, cashew or almond families that dominate tree nut allergy. That is not a green light if you have a diagnosed nut allergy, since novel plant proteins have their own risks, but it does mean the usual tree nut trigger story does not automatically apply. Ask an allergist before a first taste.
