About Millet
Millet is the gluten-free grain that almost never gets questioned.
It is genuinely gluten free (graded A), clean on histamine, salicylates, nickel, sulfites and free glutamates, and it feeds hundreds of millions of people daily as bajra, ragi and jowar across India and the Sahel. The catch nobody mentions when they hand you a bag of millet as a wheat replacement: our data grades it E for oxalate, the top band. If you are managing calcium oxalate kidney stones or running an oxalate-restricted protocol, swapping wheat for millet trades one problem for another. Millet also carries a well-documented goitrogenic property, which matters specifically for people eating it as a staple on a low-iodine diet, not for someone having it twice a week.

- Millet contains C-glycosylflavones that inhibit thyroid peroxidase, the enzyme that builds thyroid hormone. The goiter link is documented in populations where millet is the staple calorie source and iodine intake is low, so the practical risk sits with staple-level intake plus low iodine, not with an occasional bowl
- Gluten free by nature (graded A), but millet flour is frequently milled and packed on shared equipment with wheat. If you have coeliac disease, the certification on the bag matters more than the grain
- Moderate on total FODMAPs (graded B), so a generous bowl of millet porridge or several bajra rotis can add up even though no single FODMAP subgroup is flagged

Is millet high in oxalate?
Yes. Our data grades millet E for oxalate, the highest band we use. That is unusual for a food marketed almost entirely on being gluten free, and it is the single most useful thing to know about millet if you form calcium oxalate kidney stones or have been told to keep oxalate low. White rice and rice flour are graded A for oxalate and fill the same role.
Is millet gluten free?
The grain itself contains no gluten and is graded A, so millet is safe for coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity in its pure form. The realistic risk is cross-contact: millet, millet flour and multigrain flour blends are often processed alongside wheat. Buy certified gluten-free millet if a trace amount matters to you.
Is millet bad for your thyroid?
Millet is goitrogenic. It contains flavonoids that inhibit thyroid peroxidase, and the association with goiter has been observed in regions where millet is the staple food and dietary iodine is low. For someone with adequate iodine eating millet a few times a week, this is not a meaningful concern. If you have hypothyroidism, eat millet daily as a staple, or have known iodine deficiency, it is worth raising with your clinician rather than guessing.
Is millet low FODMAP?
Millet is graded B on total FODMAPs, which is the moderate band, and it is graded A on fructans, GOS, excess fructose and polyols individually. In practice that means portion size is the lever: a standard serving is usually well tolerated, while a large helping can still bother a sensitive gut.
