Overview
About Garbanzo beans
Garbanzo beans, better known as chickpeas, are high-FODMAP but their trigger profile is different from kidney or black beans: they are high in both fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), a double oligosaccharide hit that ferments in the gut.
The good news is they are otherwise clean, low in histamine, salicylate, oxalate and nickel, and a small canned-and-rinsed portion (about a 1/4 cup) is actually low-FODMAP.

How Garbanzo beans scores
Watch for
What trips people up
- High in fructans as well as GOS, so chickpeas carry two fermentable FODMAPs where most beans mainly carry GOS, which can mean more gas and bloating
- A small canned, drained and rinsed portion (roughly 1/4 cup) is low-FODMAP; the trouble starts with larger servings and with dishes that pile them on
- Hummus stacks the odds: the chickpeas bring fructans and GOS, and the garlic adds still more fructans, so hummus is often less tolerated than a measured portion of plain chickpeas

FAQ
Common questions about Garbanzo beans
Are chickpeas low FODMAP in small amounts?
A canned, drained and rinsed portion of around 1/4 cup is considered low-FODMAP and is tolerated by many people with IBS. Larger servings push both the fructans and the GOS above the threshold and can trigger gas and bloating. Rinsing matters because it washes water-soluble FODMAPs off the beans.
Why does hummus bother me more than plain chickpeas?
Hummus concentrates chickpeas, which already carry fructans and GOS, and most recipes add garlic, which is one of the highest-fructan foods there is. So a scoop of hummus can deliver a bigger fermentable load than a measured portion of rinsed chickpeas on their own.
Are chickpeas high in histamine or salicylates?
No. Chickpeas are low in histamine, salicylate, oxalate and nickel, which is what sets them apart from kidney beans. Their main trigger is the combination of fructans and GOS, so the issue is fermentation and gas rather than histamine or skin reactions.
