Overview

About ginger root

Fresh ginger root is the knobbly rhizome you grate into stir-fries, steep for tea, or press into cold-pressed juices and ginger shots.

On trigger data it is clean on histamine, FODMAP and gluten, and its one flag is salicylates, where it grades moderate. That barely matters for a slice in tea, but concentrated forms like ginger shots and fresh juices press several roots into a single drink, which is where salicylate-sensitive people tend to notice it. Fresh root is also milder than dried ground ginger, so if you react, a small fresh grating is the gentler way to use it.

How ginger root scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • Moderate in salicylates, so a whole-root ginger shot or a big glug of fresh juice is a far larger dose than a coin of ginger in a stir-fry.
  • Fresh versus dried: ground ginger is more concentrated per spoon, so grating fresh root is the lower-salicylate way to get the flavour if you are sensitive.
  • It is warming and anti-nausea, so people tend to use a lot; the trigger load scales with how concentrated your preparation is.

FAQ

Common questions about ginger root

Is fresh ginger high in salicylates?

It is moderate, not high. A slice of fresh ginger in tea or a stir-fry is a small dose, but ginger shots and fresh juices concentrate several roots at once, which can add up if you are salicylate-sensitive.

Is fresh ginger low FODMAP?

Yes. Fresh ginger root is low FODMAP at normal amounts and is a popular way to add flavour on a low-FODMAP or IBS diet without reaching for onion or garlic.

Is fresh ginger better than ground ginger for sensitivities?

Fresh tends to be gentler because dried, ground ginger is more concentrated per spoon. If salicylates are your issue, grate a small amount of fresh root rather than relying on heavy doses of the powder.
