Overview
About macadamia nuts
Macadamias are the nut most often recommended as the safe one: they are low histamine and among the lowest-FODMAP nuts in a normal serve, which is why gut and histamine protocols reach for them first.
The catch is salicylates. Macadamias are high in salicylates, so if you are salicylate sensitive or react to aspirin, the usual safe nut can still set you off. They are also a tree-nut allergen and very high in fat.

Watch for
What trips people up
- High in salicylates, the one real catch on an otherwise gentle nut, and the reason it can trigger people who tolerate its FODMAP and histamine profile fine
- Low FODMAP in a standard serve and low in histamine, which is exactly why it is the go-to safe nut for IBS and histamine intolerance
- Moderate nickel, usually a minor issue but worth noting if you stack it with other nickel-rich foods
- A tree-nut allergen and very high in fat, so large portions can also unsettle digestion

FAQ
Common questions about macadamia nuts
Are macadamia nuts really the safest nut?
For gut and histamine issues, mostly yes: macadamias are low histamine and one of the lowest-FODMAP nuts per serve, so they cause fewer bloating and histamine reactions than almonds, cashews or pistachios. The exception is salicylate sensitivity, where macadamias are actually a high-salicylate food and not the safe choice.
Are macadamia nuts high in salicylates?
Yes. Macadamias are high in salicylates, which is the main reason a salicylate-sensitive person can react to them even though they are gentle on FODMAPs and histamine. If aspirin or salicylate-rich foods bother you, lower-salicylate nuts like cashews or pecans are a better pick.
Are macadamia nuts low FODMAP?
In a standard serving they are low FODMAP, which is why they are one of the few nuts openly recommended on a low-FODMAP diet. Very large portions add up, but a normal handful is well tolerated by most sensitive guts.
