About Hard cider
Hard cider stacks several triggers at once: it keeps the apple base high in excess fructose and sorbitol (a polyol), while fermentation and the alcohol itself push up histamine, plus sulfites are added to preserve it.
Alcohol also blocks DAO, the enzyme that clears histamine, so hard cider is a common cause of flushing, headache and gut upset even in people who tolerate a fresh apple.

Why does hard cider give me a headache or flushing when wine seems fine?
Hard cider carries histamine from fermentation and, like all alcohol, blocks DAO so your body clears histamine more slowly. On top of that the apple base is high in fructose and sorbitol. That FODMAP plus histamine plus alcohol combination is a frequent cause of flushing, headache and bloating, and it can hit harder than a distilled spirit that has none of the apple sugars.
Is hard cider worse than regular apple cider?
For most trigger reasons, yes. Both share the excess fructose and sorbitol of apples, but hard cider adds alcohol, fermentation histamine and preservative sulfites on top. A clear distilled spirit like gin or vodka skips the apple sugars and is lower in histamine and sulfites, and ginger tea avoids the alcohol entirely.
