Overview

About hazelnut

Hazelnuts are one of the highest-nickel tree nuts, which is the main reason they trigger people even when other snacks feel fine.

They are moderate on FODMAPs (from galacto-oligosaccharides) and only mildly histamine-raising, so a small handful is usually tolerated, but chocolate hazelnut spreads, gianduja and praline concentrate them and are a common flare culprit. As a major tree-nut allergen they also hide inside a lot of baked goods.

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in nickel, the strongest trigger here, which matters if you have systemic nickel allergy: chocolate-hazelnut spreads and pralines pack a lot of hazelnut into one serving
  • Moderate FODMAP load from galacto-oligosaccharides, so a few nuts are fine for most but a jar of spread or a bag of them can bloat a sensitive gut
  • Mildly histamine-active, and roasting or long storage tends to push that higher
  • A major tree-nut allergen that hides in praline, gianduja, nut flours and many desserts

FAQ

Common questions about hazelnut

Are hazelnuts high in nickel?

Yes. Hazelnuts sit among the highest-nickel tree nuts, so they are a frequent trigger for people with systemic nickel allergy. The problem is often dose: a chocolate hazelnut spread or a handful of pralines delivers far more hazelnut, and therefore more nickel, than a couple of whole nuts.

Why does chocolate hazelnut spread trigger me when a few nuts do not?

Spreads like Nutella and gianduja are concentrated hazelnut plus cocoa, and cocoa is itself high in nickel. A tablespoon or two stacks two nickel-rich foods together, which can tip you over your threshold even if a small serving of whole hazelnuts was fine.

Are hazelnuts low FODMAP?

In a small serving they are close to low FODMAP, but they carry galacto-oligosaccharides that build up quickly. A modest handful is usually tolerated on a low-FODMAP plan, while larger amounts or hazelnut-heavy spreads can cause gas and bloating.
