Overview

About Garam masala

Garam masala is high in salicylates, and that is the trade-off of a spice blend: it packs cinnamon, clove, cumin, coriander, cardamom and pepper into one spoonful, and those dried aromatic spices are each salicylate-dense, so together they grade high.

The blend angle matters because any single one of those spices understates the load you actually get. Many blends also fold in chili or paprika, adding a moderate nightshade note, and some can pick up traces of gluten in processing.

How Garam masala scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in salicylates: a concentrated mix of aromatic spices, each salicylate-rich, so a spoonful stacks up fast for salicylate-sensitive people
  • Many blends include chili or paprika, adding a moderate nightshade element that plain warming spices do not have
  • Can carry traces of gluten depending on the brand and processing, worth a label check if you are coeliac
  • Holds some nickel from the seeds and spices, which matters for systemic nickel allergy

FAQ

Common questions about Garam masala

Is garam masala high in salicylates?

Yes. Garam masala combines several salicylate-rich dried spices, including cinnamon, clove, cardamom, cumin and pepper, so the blend grades high in salicylates. Because it concentrates many spices at once, even a small amount can be a meaningful salicylate load if you are sensitive.

Does garam masala contain nightshades?

Often, indirectly. Classic garam masala is built from warming, non-nightshade spices, but many commercial blends add chili powder or paprika, which are nightshades. If you react to nightshades, check the ingredient list or use a blend you know is free of them.

Is garam masala gluten free?

Pure spices are naturally gluten free, but a blend can pick up traces of gluten through anti-caking agents, fillers or shared processing lines. If you are coeliac, look for a blend labelled gluten free rather than assuming.
