Overview
About Carob Pods
Carob pods are the dried fruit of the Mediterranean carob tree, eaten whole as a chewy sweet or roasted and milled into the carob powder sold as a chocolate substitute.
The comparison with cocoa is the whole point of the ingredient, and the grades back it up: cocoa is high in oxalate and nickel, high in histamine and salicylate, and carries caffeine, while carob grades A on every single one of those and contains neither caffeine nor theobromine. The one real catch is carbohydrate. Carob pods are roughly half sugar by weight, packed with fibre, and graded D for fructans and D for FODMAPs, so the bloating people blame on chocolate can follow them into the chocolate free version.

How Carob Pods scores
Watch for
What trips people up
- Fructans and overall FODMAPs both grade D. This is carob the whole pod, dense in sugar and fibre, so a bar or a generous scoop of powder is a very different exposure from a teaspoon stirred into milk
- Caffeine free and theobromine free (caffeine A), which is the genuine reason to choose it over cocoa if stimulants trigger your migraines, reflux or palpitations
- Clean exactly where cocoa is not: histamine A against cocoa D, oxalate A against cocoa E, nickel A against cocoa E, salicylate A against cocoa D. For a histamine, oxalate or nickel sensitive reader that swap is a real one, not a marketing line
- Naturally sweet, which means the sugar arrives whether or not the label says no added sugar. Worth logging as sugar if you track it
- Most commercial carob bars are carob plus milk solids and palm fat, so lactose and dairy protein come from the confectionery, not from the pod, which grades A on both

FAQ
Common questions about Carob Pods
Is carob low FODMAP?
The whole pod is not. It grades D for fructans and D for FODMAPs, reflecting the sugars and fibre concentrated in the dried pod. Very small amounts of carob powder used as a flavouring are a different proposition from eating pods or a carob bar, and many people find a teaspoon fine while a portion is not. Treat it as a dose dependent high FODMAP ingredient rather than a free food.
Does carob have caffeine?
No, and it has no theobromine either. That is the single clearest difference from cocoa, which contains both. If chocolate gives you a racing heart, disturbed sleep or a migraine, carob removes the stimulant entirely, and it grades A for caffeine here to reflect that.
Is carob better than chocolate for histamine intolerance?
On the grades, clearly yes. Cocoa is graded D for histamine content and C for histamine liberation, and it is a common problem food on histamine intolerance lists. Carob is A on both. It is also A on nickel and oxalate where cocoa is E on each, so it also suits people managing nickel allergy or kidney stones. Check what else is in the finished product though, since a carob bar may still contain milk.
Why does carob upset my stomach if it has no caffeine?
Because the trigger is carbohydrate rather than a stimulant or a food chemical. Carob pods are fructan rich and very high in fibre, both of which ferment in the large intestine and produce gas. That is a completely different mechanism from the caffeine and theobromine effects of chocolate, and it explains why swapping cocoa for carob can fix the palpitations while leaving the bloating exactly where it was.
