Overview

About Egg white

Is egg white a trigger food?

On food chemistry it is clean: low in histamine, salicylates, FODMAPs and the rest of that family. Its trigger story is a different one. Egg is a top allergen and one of the six foods removed in the six-food elimination diet for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and egg white carries most of the egg proteins that cause reactions (ovomucoid, ovalbumin). So egg white can be a genuine problem through IgE allergy or EoE even though it is not a histamine or FODMAP trigger at all.

What trips people up

  • Egg white holds the main egg allergens (ovomucoid, ovalbumin), making it a common IgE food allergy, especially in children
  • Egg is one of the six foods excluded in the six-food elimination diet for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), and egg white is the more allergenic part
  • Clean on food-chemical triggers: low in histamine, salicylates, tyramine and FODMAPs
  • Vegetarian but not vegan

FAQ

Common questions about Egg white

Is egg white ok for histamine intolerance?

Yes. Egg white is low in histamine and is not a histamine liberator, so it is usually fine on a low-histamine diet. Its issues are allergy-related, not histamine-related: it is a common IgE allergen and part of the EoE elimination diet.

Why is egg white a bigger allergy risk than the yolk?

Most of the proteins that trigger egg allergy (ovomucoid, ovalbumin, ovotransferrin) sit in the white. That is why people with egg allergy often react more to the white, and why some tolerate the yolk better once cross-contamination is controlled.

Is egg part of an elimination diet?

Yes. Egg is one of the six common trigger foods (with milk, wheat, soy, nuts and fish) removed in the six-food elimination diet used for eosinophilic esophagitis. Egg white, as the more allergenic portion, is the part that usually matters.
