About Agave nectar

Agave nectar is marketed as a healthy low-GI sweetener, but it is one of the most concentrated sources of excess fructose you can buy, often 70 to 90 percent fructose.

That is exactly what people with fructose malabsorption cannot absorb, so agave is a common hidden trigger for bloating, gas and loose stools even though it barely moves blood sugar.

Common questions about Agave nectar

Is agave nectar low FODMAP?

No. Agave nectar is very high in excess fructose, the FODMAP that drives fructose malabsorption, so it is not low FODMAP. Even a teaspoon can trigger bloating and diarrhoea in sensitive people. Pure glucose, maple syrup or stevia are far safer sweeteners on this trigger.

Why does agave upset my stomach if it is meant to be healthy?

Agave is sold as a healthy low-glycaemic sweetener, but the reason it barely raises blood sugar is that most of it is free fructose rather than glucose. Free fructose is poorly absorbed by many people, and the unabsorbed portion ferments in the gut, causing gas, cramping and loose stools.

Is agave better than honey or table sugar for a sensitive gut?

For fructose malabsorption it is usually worse. Agave carries more free fructose than table sugar, where the fructose is balanced one to one with glucose, and often more than honey. If fructose is your trigger, a glucose-based sweetener beats all three.
