Overview

About Tzatziki

Tzatziki is a Greek yogurt dip built on cucumber, garlic and often lemon, and the garlic is what makes it a hidden FODMAP trap.

It grades high in fructans, the FODMAP concentrated in raw garlic, which is a leading cause of bloating, gas and cramping on a low FODMAP plan, even in the small amount stirred through a dip. The yogurt base adds high dairy protein and moderate lactose, while histamine stays mild. So unlike a fat based ranch or caesar, the trigger in tzatziki is usually the garlic, not the dressing.

Watch for

What trips people up

  • High in fructans from the raw garlic, a common IBS and low FODMAP trigger for bloating and gas even in dip sized amounts
  • High overall FODMAP load once the garlic and yogurt combine
  • High in dairy protein and moderate in lactose from the Greek yogurt base
  • Mild histamine, so it is gentler than a fermented or aged dip if amines are your issue

FAQ

Common questions about Tzatziki

Is tzatziki low FODMAP?

Not as usually made. Tzatziki is high in fructans because of the raw garlic, and garlic is one of the most potent FODMAP triggers for bloating and gas. A version made with garlic infused oil, which leaves the fructans behind, and lactose free yogurt can be made low FODMAP, but the standard recipe is not.

Why does tzatziki cause bloating?

The usual culprit is the garlic. Garlic is high in fructans, a fermentable carbohydrate a sensitive or IBS prone gut cannot absorb well, so it ferments and produces gas. The yogurt adds lactose on top, which can compound the bloating if you are also lactose sensitive.

Is the garlic or the yogurt the bigger trigger in tzatziki?

For most people it is the garlic. Even a spoonful of raw garlic carries enough fructans to trigger FODMAP symptoms, while the yogurt mainly matters if you are lactose or dairy protein sensitive. If garlic is your problem, a plain or garlic free dip is the safer swap.
