Overview
About English Breakfast Tea
English breakfast tea is the plain black-tea baseline: no spices, no citrus oil, nothing added.
It rates clean on gluten, FODMAPs, lactose, sulfites, nickel and glutamates, and only two things about it are worth tracking. Caffeine is moderate, roughly 40 to 50 mg in a mug, about half of what a coffee gives you. The second is the tannins, which bind non-heme iron in the same meal and are the reason a strong cup with breakfast can quietly work against an iron supplement.

How English Breakfast Tea scores
Watch for
What trips people up
- Moderate caffeine, and steep time changes it more than brand does: a five minute brew pulls noticeably more than a two minute one, so an evening cup can still cost you sleep
- Tannins cut absorption of non-heme iron from the same meal by more than half in controlled studies, which matters if you are low in ferritin, vegetarian, or taking iron tablets
- Mildly rated on histamine, histamine liberation and tyramine, so it is a background contributor at best rather than a headline trigger, though people on strict histamine protocols often park black tea anyway
- The milk, not the tea, is what makes a builders brew a lactose problem: the leaf itself is lactose free

FAQ
Common questions about English Breakfast Tea
How much caffeine is in English breakfast tea?
A moderate amount, around 40 to 50 mg per mug, which is roughly half a cup of drip coffee. The number moves with how long you steep it rather than with the brand on the box, so if caffeine is your trigger, pull the bag at two minutes instead of buying a different tea.
Does English breakfast tea block iron absorption?
It reduces it. The tannins and polyphenols in black tea bind non-heme iron (the form in plants, eggs and fortified cereal) and controlled studies show absorption dropping by more than half when tea is drunk with the meal. Heme iron from meat is much less affected. If you are managing low iron, keep the tea about an hour either side of the meal or the supplement rather than giving it up.
Is English breakfast tea low FODMAP?
The brewed tea itself rates clean on FODMAPs, fructans, polyols and fructose. What tends to cause trouble is what goes in it: cow milk brings lactose, and a very long steep pulls more fermentable material out of the leaf than a quick one. Weak and splashed with a lactose free milk is the safest version.
Is black breakfast tea a problem for histamine intolerance?
It is rated mild rather than high on both histamine content and histamine liberation. That puts it in the grey zone: not a food most people react to sharply, but commonly listed as a caution on strict elimination protocols. If you are testing, the honest move is to log a cup on its own and see, rather than assuming either way.
