About Stevia leaf
Stevia leaf is the dried green leaf of Stevia rebaudiana, not the white powder in the packet.
That distinction matters more than most people expect. The leaf itself grades clean across every trigger we track: no histamine, no histamine release, no salicylate, no oxalate, no FODMAPs, no fructans, no polyols, no nickel, no sulfites and nothing that feeds bacterial fermentation. Our separate entry for retail stevia scores far worse for gut fermentation, and the reason is what is in the tub rather than what is in the plant: commercial stevia is typically one or two percent steviol glycosides carried in erythritol, maltodextrin, dextrose or inulin. If stevia bloats you, the bulking agent is the first suspect and the leaf is the last.

- Green leaf and white powder behave differently in a symptom log. Whole leaf carries no polyol or fermentable filler, while packet stevia usually rides on erythritol or inulin, both of which are well documented causes of bloating and osmotic diarrhoea at everyday doses
- Stevia is in the Asteraceae family alongside ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold and daisy. Reported allergy to stevia is rare, but if you have ragweed pollen allergy it is a plausible cross-reaction and worth a cautious first exposure
- In the US, whole stevia leaf and crude leaf extract are not approved as sweeteners. FDA has only cleared high-purity steviol glycosides (95 percent or above), and leaf material sits under an import alert, so you will find it sold as a herbal tea or supplement rather than a table sweetener
- The flavour is not neutral. Whole leaf brings a grassy, liquorice-like bitterness that many people mistake for a reaction. Taste aversion and a genuine symptom are different things, and only the log tells them apart

Common questions about Stevia leaf
Is stevia leaf low FODMAP?
Yes. The leaf carries no fructans, no galacto-oligosaccharides, no excess fructose and no polyols, and it does not feed bacterial fermentation in our grading. The catch is that most products sold as stevia are not pure leaf or pure glycoside. Bulked stevia often contains erythritol, a polyol, or inulin, a fructan, and either can push a serving out of low FODMAP territory even though the sweetener component never does.
Why does stevia bloat me when stevia leaf does not?
Because you are almost certainly not eating stevia. Steviol glycosides are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so a spoon-for-spoon product has to be diluted, and the carrier is usually erythritol, maltodextrin, dextrose or inulin. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that draws water into the bowel, and inulin is a fructan that ferments quickly. Reading the second ingredient on the label resolves this faster than eliminating stevia does.
Can you be allergic to stevia leaf?
It is uncommon but documented. Stevia rebaudiana belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, which also includes ragweed, chamomile, chrysanthemum and marigold, and cross-reactivity within that family is a recognised pattern in pollen-allergic people. If ragweed season affects you, treat a first cup of stevia leaf tea as a test rather than a given.
Is stevia leaf the same as the stevia in the packet?
No. The packet contains purified steviol glycosides, mainly rebaudioside A, extracted and refined to at least 95 percent purity, plus a bulking agent. Stevia leaf is the whole dried plant material with its fibre, chlorophyll and bitter notes intact. US regulators treat them as different substances: high-purity glycosides have cleared GRAS review, while leaf and crude extract have not been approved as food sweeteners.
