Whey protein grades at the very top of the dairy protein scale (E), which surprises people who switched to it precisely to avoid dairy.
Whey is one of the two proteins in milk, alongside casein, so a scoop is a concentrated dose of exactly the thing a cow milk protein allergy reacts to. Lactose is a separate and much smaller issue: it grades moderate (C), high enough to explain the bloating and wind that people blame on the protein itself. Everything else is quiet. Whey is clean on gluten, sulfites, nitrites, lectins, nightshades and every FODMAP other than lactose, and only borderline on histamine, tyramine and glutamates.

- Graded highest on dairy protein (E). If you or your child reacts to cow milk protein, whey is not a dairy alternative, it is dairy in its most concentrated form, and it must be declared as milk on the label.
- Moderate lactose (C), and the amount depends entirely on the grade. Concentrate keeps a meaningful share of milk sugar, isolate is filtered down to very little, and hydrolysate less again.
- The moderate FODMAP grade is essentially the lactose. Strip that out with an isolate and the FODMAP problem largely goes with it, but the protein does not change at all.
- Borderline on histamine, histamine liberation, tyramine and glutamates. Low-level rather than a strong trigger, but enough to notice if you drink a shake alongside other borderline foods every day.
- Vegetarian but not vegan, and not a fit for a paleo pattern.

Is whey protein dairy?
Yes, completely. Whey is the liquid fraction left when milk is curdled and the curds are removed for cheese, and it is dried into powder from there. It is one of the two milk proteins, so it grades at the top of the dairy protein scale and has to be labelled as milk. There is no version of whey that is dairy free.
Does whey protein isolate still contain lactose?
A little, but far less than concentrate. Concentrate typically retains a meaningful amount of milk sugar because the filtering stops earlier, while isolate is processed further to strip carbohydrate and fat away, leaving a trace amount that many lactose intolerant people tolerate fine. Hydrolysate is lower again. If your issue is the sugar rather than the protein, moving from concentrate to isolate is the single most useful change.
Can I use whey protein if I am allergic to milk?
No. This is the distinction that matters most on this page. Lactose intolerance is a digestive problem with milk sugar, and an isolate largely solves it. A milk protein allergy is an immune reaction to the protein itself, and whey is that protein, so filtering out lactose changes nothing about the risk. Anyone avoiding milk protein needs a plant or egg based powder instead, and should treat whey the same way they treat a glass of milk.
Why does whey protein make me bloated?
Usually the residual lactose. Whey concentrate carries enough milk sugar that a large scoop, especially mixed into milk, can deliver more lactose than a glass of milk would. Undigested lactose ferments in the colon and produces gas, bloating and looser stools. Switching to an isolate or a plant protein and mixing with water rather than milk is the quickest way to test whether that is what is happening.
