Low-acid foods for reflux: what to eat while it heals

A low-acid meal does not lower stomach acid. It stops irritating tissue that is already inflamed, which is a different and more useful thing.

Reflux advice is almost always a list of things to stop. Cut the citrus, cut the tomatoes, cut the coffee, cut the wine. It is accurate as far as it goes and it leaves you without a dinner.

The useful half is what to build meals from while your oesophagus settles. Below is what our database grades low in acid, drawn from the same data as our acidic foods list.

How a low-acid meal helps reflux

Your stomach runs at a pH of about 1.5 to 3.5, more acidic than anything you will eat, so the food you choose leaves that number where it was.

Low-acid food helps by not irritating tissue that is already inflamed. Reflux damages the lining of the oesophagus; acidic food landing on that damage hurts. Take away the irritation and the tissue gets a chance to heal, and once it has, many people find acidic food stops bothering them.

Treat this as a list for the healing phase. Most people work back toward tomatoes and citrus over the following months.

Meal size, timing, fat and the valve relaxers

Four things drive reflux more reliably than the pH of any food, and a list like this is half the job without them.

Meal size. A full stomach pushes upward against a valve that is only so strong. Smaller meals more often beats three large ones.

Timing. Lying down within three hours of eating removes gravity from your side. For most people this single change does more than any food swap.

Fat. Fat slows stomach emptying, so a fatty meal sits longer and keeps pushing. A creamy sauce can cause more trouble than a tomato one.

The valve relaxers. Alcohol, caffeine, chocolate and mint all loosen the lower oesophageal sphincter directly, which is why mint tea is bad advice for reflux despite feeling soothing.1

How to use this list

Build from it for three or four weeks while your oesophagus heals. Keep meals smaller, stop eating three hours before bed, and see where you are.

Then reintroduce tomatoes and citrus one at a time, in ordinary portions, a few days apart. Many people find their tolerance is much better than it was, because they are no longer eating on inflamed tissue.

If four weeks of this changes nothing, the problem is more likely to be mechanical than dietary, and worth raising with a doctor before you restrict anything else. Persistent reflux is also worth investigating properly, because it is treatable and because long-standing untreated reflux carries its own risks.

Check any food in seconds

The acidic food checker grades any food in our database, and every food on this page links to its own page with the rest of what it carries.

Where Triggerbites fits in

This list comes from the food data inside Triggerbites. The app grades every ingredient for acidity alongside alcohol, spicy food, caffeine and the rest of the trigger criteria.

Reflux depends on when you ate as well as what, so the app records both. You type or say your day the way you'd tell a friend: "coffee and a croissant at 8, tomato pasta and a Coke Zero at 1, a big curry at 9:30 and in bed by 10:30, heartburn most of the night". Triggerbites pulls out the ingredients, grades them, and puts each meal on the day's timeline beside your symptoms and your sleep.

Over a few weeks you can tell the meals that caused trouble from the ones that were simply too late or too large. When you next see your doctor, you can export the record as a PDF.

Common questions

What foods are lowest in acid?

Oats, bread, rice, pasta and potato, most meat, fish and eggs, milk and yoghurt, bananas and melon, and most green vegetables. The low list is far longer than the high one.

Does a low-acid diet reduce stomach acid?

No, and that is worth understanding. Your stomach is more acidic than anything you eat. A low-acid diet avoids irritating an oesophagus that is already inflamed, which lets it heal. That is a different mechanism from lowering acid.

How long should I stay on a low-acid diet?

Three or four weeks is usually enough for the tissue to settle, then reintroduce tomatoes and citrus one at a time. Many people find their tolerance is much better afterwards, because they are no longer eating on inflamed tissue.

Is mint good for reflux?

No, despite feeling soothing. Mint relaxes the lower oesophageal sphincter directly, which is the valve that should keep stomach contents down. Alcohol, caffeine and chocolate do the same thing.

What matters more than avoiding acidic food?

Meal size, because a full stomach pushes upward. Timing, because lying down within three hours of eating removes gravity from your side. Fat content, because fat slows stomach emptying. For most people, the timing change does more than any food swap.

What if a low-acid diet does not help?

Then the problem is more likely mechanical than dietary, and worth raising with a doctor before you restrict anything else. Persistent reflux is treatable, and long-standing untreated reflux carries its own risks.
