Overview

About IPA

IPA (India Pale Ale) is a hop-forward craft beer, and the extra hops do not make it any gentler on the triggers that matter.

It is brewed from malted barley, so it is high in gluten (grade E), and because it is fermented and often unfiltered, it is high in histamine (grade D) with moderate tyramine and sulfites. If beer leaves you flushed, congested or bloated, a hoppy IPA is one of the more likely culprits, not the crisp lager people tend to blame.

How IPA scores

Watch for

What trips people up

  • Brewed from malted barley, so it is not gluten free and is a clear problem on a celiac or gluten-sensitive diet
  • High in histamine from fermentation, a common reason a pint brings on flushing, a stuffy nose, headache or hives
  • Carries moderate tyramine and sulfites, which can stack with the histamine for migraine-prone or sulfite-sensitive drinkers
  • Hazy, unfiltered and high-ABV styles sit in the tank longer, which tends to push the histamine load higher still

FAQ

Common questions about IPA

Is IPA gluten free?

No. IPA is brewed from malted barley and is high in gluten. Distillation removes gluten but brewing does not, so even a hoppy craft IPA is off-limits on a strict gluten-free or celiac diet. A distilled spirit like gin or vodka is the gluten-free swap.

Does IPA cause flushing or a stuffy nose?

It can. IPA is a fermented beer and ranks high in histamine, and it also carries some tyramine, so a single pint can bring on facial flushing, nasal congestion, headache or hives in histamine-intolerant people.

Are hoppy IPAs worse than regular beer for triggers?

The hops mainly add bitterness and aroma, not a big new trigger. The real load is the same as any beer: barley gluten plus fermentation histamine. High-ABV, unfiltered hazy IPAs can carry a bit more histamine because of longer, more active fermentation.
