Sensitivity notes

Why gos food checker matters

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are carbohydrates found mainly in legumes and some vegetables. They're a FODMAP that can ferment in the gut, causing bloating and discomfort in sensitive people.

  • Canned and rinsed legumes are lower in GOS than dried
  • Start with smaller portions and build up tolerance
  • Some people find beano-type enzymes helpful
  • Firm tofu is lower in GOS than silken tofu
  • Sprouted legumes may be better tolerated

What to know about youngberry

Every other bramble in this journal is a sorbitol story. Blackberry, marionberry, olallieberry, boysenberry and dewberry all carry a heavy polyol load, and the complaint people report is bloating an hour after the bowl. Youngberry is graded differently, and it is the one Rubus here whose flags sit on the amine side instead. Bred in Louisiana in the early 1900s by B. M. Young and now the standard jam bramble of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, it grades mildly elevated for histamine content and mildly elevated for tyramine, a pairing it shares among the brambles only with raspberry, which grades higher again on both. Alongside those sit mild grades for histamine liberation, salicylates, oxalate, nickel and free glutamates. Its total FODMAP column is untested, but the two subgroups that have been assessed, fructans and GOS, both grade clean. So if youngberry causes you trouble, amines and the form you ate it in are the better first hypothesis than sugar alcohol.

Watch for

  • Histamine and tyramine both graded mildly elevated, which is unusual for a fresh berry and is the reason this page exists.Tyramine is not in the fruit at harvest; it is produced from tyrosine by bacteria and it climbs with ripeness, bruising, long storage and any fermentation. Youngberry is a very soft, deep purple berry picked dead ripe, which is precisely the profile that lets amines accumulate
  • The form is the real caveat.Almost no youngberry is sold fresh, because it will not travel, so what people actually eat is jam, a bag from the freezer, or fruit that has been sitting. Thawed berries left out for a day, a jar open in the fridge for a month, and anything wine-adjacent are where a mild grade turns into a dose worth noticing
  • If you take an MAOI antidepressant, tyramine is the interaction to be aware of.A mild grade is a reason to keep servings ordinary rather than to avoid the fruit outright, and it is a question for whoever prescribes it rather than for a food journal
  • Fructans and GOS both grade clean and the total FODMAP column is unrated. That means youngberry should not be assumed to behave like the polyol-heavy brambles it is related to, and equally should not be assumed to be free. Log the portion the first few times and let your own record settle it
  • Mildly elevated on salicylates where blackberry grades high.If a bramble reaction showed up as itching, hives or a blocked nose rather than as gut symptoms, that difference makes youngberry one of the more interesting brambles to retest on its own
