Why lactose food checker matters
Lactose is the natural sugar in milk and dairy products. People with lactose intolerance lack sufficient lactase enzyme to digest it, leading to bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort after consuming dairy.
- Try lactose-free dairy products - they're real dairy with lactase added
- Hard aged cheeses are naturally lower in lactose
- Lactase enzyme supplements can help when eating dairy
- Yogurt and kefir may be better tolerated due to probiotics
- Your tolerance level is personal - some can handle small amounts

What to know about olive tapenade
Olive tapenade looks like a cured-food problem and mostly is not one. Our grading puts it high on FODMAPs and specifically on fructans, which in a tapenade means the garlic, not the olives. Histamine itself only rates moderate, with moderate grades alongside it for histamine liberation, tyramine and free glutamate, so the brine-and-cure side of the jar is a low background hum rather than the headline. That combination explains a common complaint: people who eat plain olives happily still bloat, cramp or gurgle an hour after tapenade on toast. It is worth knowing what tapenade is clean on too, because the list is long. It grades clean for gluten, lactose, dairy protein, oxalate, nickel, nitrites, polyols and nightshade, which makes it usable on a lot of restrictive plans as long as fructans are not your issue. The one variable the grades cannot see is the recipe. Traditional tapenade includes anchovy, and we grade anchovy very high for histamine and high for tyramine, so an anchovy version is a genuinely different food from the vegan jars this grading reflects.
Watch for
- High in fructans and high FODMAP overall, and the garlic is doing almost all of that work.Olives on their own grade far lower, so the paste is harsher than its ingredients suggest
- Read the jar for anchovy. We grade anchovy very high for histamine and high for tyramine, so a traditional anchovy tapenade carries a much heavier amine load than the moderate histamine grade on this page
- Moderate for histamine liberation and moderate for tyramine, which matters less on its own than in context.Tapenade is usually eaten alongside cheese, cured meat or wine, and those loads add together
- Moderate free glutamate. The deep savoury hit of cured olives is glutamate that developed during curing, so tapenade can provoke MSG-type reactions with no added MSG on the label
- Rated poorly for low-fermentation and SIBO protocols, and moderate for salicylates from the olives and herbs
