Sensitivity notes
Why fructans food checker matters
Fructans are chains of fructose molecules found in wheat, onions, garlic, and many other foods. They're a type of FODMAP that can cause digestive symptoms in sensitive individuals because they're not well absorbed in the small intestine.
- Garlic-infused oil is low-FODMAP since fructans don't dissolve in oil
- Green parts of leeks and scallions are lower in fructans
- Sourdough bread may be better tolerated than regular wheat bread
- Spelt and ancient grains still contain fructans despite marketing claims
- Portion size matters - small amounts may be tolerable

What to know about dewberry
Dewberry is the bramble that grows sideways: a trailing, ground level Rubus whose fruit ripens ahead of the upright blackberries and wears a grey blue waxy bloom on every drupelet. Its trigger profile is unusually narrow, and that is the useful part. Dewberry is graded clean on histamine, clean on histamine liberation and, unlike a common blackberry, clean on salicylates too. The single flag is sugar alcohol: it grades high in polyols with a moderate FODMAP load overall. So dewberry is a portion problem rather than a chemistry problem, and if brambles usually upset you it is the one berry in the family where the symptoms point clearly at one cause.
Watch for
- High in polyols, and that is essentially the whole story.Sorbitol group sugars are poorly absorbed in the small intestine, pull water into the bowel and ferment in the colon, so the cramping and wind tend to arrive an hour or two after the handful rather than while you are eating
- Moderate FODMAP overall.Nobody eats six dewberries. They are a foraged berry, picked into a cup over twenty minutes at the edge of a field, and that harvesting habit is what turns a dose dependent polyol into a symptom
- Graded clean on salicylates, which is where it parts company with the common blackberry. If a bramble reaction gave you itching, hives or a blocked nose rather than bloating, dewberry is a sensible one to retest on its own
- Clean on histamine content, not a histamine liberator, and graded fine for SIBO fermentation. There is nothing here to manage except the size of the serving
