Why polyols food checker matters

Polyols (sugar alcohols) are found naturally in some fruits and vegetables, and are used as artificial sweeteners. They're poorly absorbed and can cause digestive symptoms, especially in IBS sufferers.

  • Avoid sugar-free products with sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol
  • Stone fruits are naturally high in polyols
  • Cooking doesn't reduce polyol content

Serving size, prep, and portion notes for chia seeds

Chia seeds are clean on almost every food-chemistry trigger people ask about: histamine, histamine liberation, tyramine, nickel, sulfites, glutamates, lactose and gluten all grade A, and chia is graded anti-inflammatory. Two things are worth knowing. Chia grades E for lectins, the highest band we use, and the same mucilage that turns a spoonful into chia pudding is why dry chia should never be swallowed and then chased with water.

Watch for

Graded E for lectins, our highest band. Chia looks clean on every chemical trigger but is one to park during a lectin elimination phase. / Borderline on FODMAPs (B), which is a dose story rather than a yes or no. A tablespoon or two stirred into yogurt behaves very differently from a full pudding bowl. / Dry chia absorbs many times its weight in liquid within minutes. There are published case reports of dry chia forming a gel plug in the oesophagus after being eaten dry and washed down, so hydrate it in the glass or the bowl, not in your throat. / Salicylate and oxalate are unrated for chia in our data, so we make no claim either way. If either is your main trigger, flax seeds carry an explicit A for oxalate and are the more predictable choice. / Seeds are excluded during an AIP elimination, so chia grades E on paleo and AIP compatibility. That is a protocol rule, not a sensitivity.
