Serving size, prep, and portion notes for flax seeds

Flax seeds grade low trigger almost everywhere. Histamine, histamine liberation, oxalate, lectins, gluten, lactose, sulfites, glutamates and every individual FODMAP group all come in at A, and flax is graded anti-inflammatory. The one criterion above safe is nickel, at a moderate C. The bigger practical issue with flax is not chemistry at all: whole seeds pass through the gut intact, so unmilled flax delivers fibre and very little of the omega-3 or lignans people buy it for.

Watch for

Moderate nickel (C) is the only trigger criterion above safe. Seeds and wholegrains are a standard limit on a systemic nickel allergy diet, so it is the running daily total that counts, not one spoonful. / Whole flax is largely indigestible. Grind it, or buy it milled, or accept that you are eating a bulking fibre rather than an ALA source. / Once the seed coat is broken the oil oxidises quickly. Ground flax kept open at room temperature turns fishy and bitter, and that rancid batch is a common reason someone decides flax disagrees with them. / Raw flax contains cyanogenic glycosides. Culinary amounts of a spoon or two are not the concern, very large raw intakes are, and cooking or baking reduces them. / The mucilage bulks up with water. Jumping straight to several tablespoons a day without raising fluid intake can leave you more blocked than before.
