Sensitivity notes

Why polyols food checker matters

Polyols (sugar alcohols) are found naturally in some fruits and vegetables, and are used as artificial sweeteners. They're poorly absorbed and can cause digestive symptoms, especially in IBS sufferers.

  • Avoid sugar-free products with sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, maltitol
  • Stone fruits are naturally high in polyols
  • Cooking doesn't reduce polyol content
  • Avocado portion size matters - small amounts may be fine
  • Cauliflower and mushrooms are common triggers

What to know about cannellini beans

Cannellini beans are the creamy white Italian kidney bean at the heart of dishes like pasta e fagioli and Tuscan ribollita. Their one real drawback is FODMAPs: they are very high in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), so a normal serving reliably produces gas and bloating and sits poorly with SIBO. What sets them apart from most other white beans is how clean they are on everything else, testing low on nickel, oxalate and salicylate, so if beans bother you it is almost certainly the FODMAP load rather than any of those secondary triggers.

Watch for

  • Very high in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), the top FODMAP driver in beans, so a standard portion commonly causes gas, bloating and discomfort
  • A poor choice during a SIBO flare because that same fermentable GOS feeds small-intestinal bacteria
  • Unlike navy beans and many other white beans, cannellini stay low on nickel, oxalate and salicylate, so those triggers are not the issue here
  • Canned cannellini that are drained and rinsed lose much of their GOS to the liquid, making a small portion far easier to tolerate
