What to know about acai powder
The single most useful thing to know about acai is that the fruit is not sweet. Acai is the pulp of an Amazonian palm berry, and unlike almost every other fruit it is low in sugar and unusually high in fat, closer in flavour to unsweetened cocoa with a faint berry edge. That is why commercial acai bowls, frozen sachets and bottled acai drinks are sweetened, often generously, and why the bowl and the berry have completely different nutritional profiles. Freeze-dried acai powder is the concentrated, unsweetened version. On the trigger grades it does well: rated S for anti-inflammatory, the top of the scale, and A for histamine, gluten, lactose, dairy protein, caffeine, sulfite, nitrite, nickel, glutamate and nightshade. Its one graded caveat is a moderate B for FODMAPs, and its salicylate and oxalate values are unrated rather than cleared.
Watch for
- Moderate FODMAP at B, and freeze-dried powder is concentrated, so a heaped scoop is a much bigger dose than the same volume of fresh pulp.Portion by weight, and treat a full acai bowl as a different exposure from a teaspoon stirred into a smoothie
- The sugar in an acai product is added sugar.Sachets come in sweetened and unsweetened versions and the packaging does not always shout about it, so check the ingredient line and count the honey, granola and fruit juice on the bowl separately
- Guarana is a very common partner in acai blends, drinks and frozen packs, and guarana is a caffeine source. The powder itself is graded A for caffeine, so if an acai drink leaves you wired, look for guarana rather than blaming the berry
- Salicylate and oxalate are unrated for acai in our data, not confirmed clean.Other berries in this database sit at D for salicylate, so if you are mid salicylate elimination treat acai as an unknown to reintroduce carefully rather than a free pass
- Rated S for anti-inflammatory, the strongest grade we give, which is the anthocyanin content the marketing is built on.That part is genuinely supported
