What to know about loquat

A loquat is not a kumquat, despite the rhyme and the shared orange skin. Kumquat is a citrus. Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is a Rosaceae pome, botanically closer to an apple, a pear or a plum, and it is one of the first tree fruits of the year, ripening in spring while stone fruit is still months off. That family membership sets the trigger profile: loquat grades at the top of our scale for total FODMAPs and polyols, with moderate free fructose and the worst grade for SIBO fermentation. It also carries the family caution about the seeds, which contain cyanogenic glycosides and are not food.

Watch for

  • Top grade for polyols and total FODMAPs.Rosaceae fruits move sugar around as sorbitol and loquat is at the high end of that pattern, so the symptoms are the usual osmotic ones rather than an immune reaction
  • The seeds take up most of the fruit, so the edible flesh per loquat is small and people eat eight or ten in a sitting without registering it as a large fruit portion. That is exactly how a polyol load creeps past the threshold
  • Loquat seeds and kernels contain cyanogenic glycosides, as do the pits of its Prunus relatives.Spit them out. Do not chew them, blend them into a smoothie or grind them into a paste, and keep them away from children. The flesh itself is fine
  • Canned loquats in syrup are worse than fresh on two counts: added sugar, and the fruit sugars and polyols that leach into the syrup people then drink from the tin
  • Worst grade for SIBO fermentation and moderate excess fructose, so loquat is a late reintroduction rather than an early trial fruit on a gut protocol
  • Mild histamine liberator, salicylate and nickel grades.Small individually, but loquat is a glut fruit that people eat in one long sitting off a neighbourhood tree
