Serving size, prep, and portion notes for tangelo
A tangelo is a tangerine crossed with a pomelo or a grapefruit, and on paper it is the cleanest citrus in our whole data set: FODMAPs A, histamine liberator A, oxalates A, nickel A, glutamates A, with only salicylates and excess fructose sitting at B. Take that with a pinch of salt. Both of its parents grade far worse (tangerine is liberator D, salicylate D and oxalate D, mandarin is liberator D and oxalate E, pomelo is salicylate C and oxalate C), and a hybrid of two heavily flagged fruits landing clean across the board reads more like sparse testing on a minor crop than a genuine biochemical rescue. One inherited question does have a real answer: when thirteen Florida tangelo varieties were analysed for furanocoumarins, almost all contained none, and the single variety that did carried traces far too low to affect CYP3A4, so tangelo is not expected to carry the grapefruit drug interaction that its pomelo side might suggest.
Watch for
Treat the clean row as provisional. Tangelo is a minor commercial fruit and its grades are almost certainly thinner than those of its parents, which are graded D and E on the very columns where tangelo scores A. If citrus reliably sets you off, do not let this row talk you out of a careful single-fruit trial. / Salicylates B is the one column that is not clean, which is at least consistent with citrus generally and with the fruit tasting as sharp as it does. / Excess fructose B. A tangelo is bigger and far juicier than a mandarin, so the sugar and fructose load per fruit is higher even though the overall FODMAP grade is A. / The grapefruit parentage does not appear to bring the grapefruit medication problem with it: tested tangelos are effectively furanocoumarin-free. Its pomelo relative is a different matter and does carry the interaction. / Sold as Minneola, Honeybell and Orlando depending on the cross. Same fruit family and the same grades, so there is no need to log them separately.
