Why dairy proteins food checker matters
Dairy proteins (casein and whey) can cause reactions in people with milk protein allergy or intolerance. This is different from lactose intolerance and can cause both digestive and systemic symptoms.
- Dairy protein allergy requires complete dairy avoidance
- Casein and whey are the main proteins to avoid
- 'Non-dairy' products may still contain casein
- Ghee may be tolerated as proteins are removed
- This is different from lactose intolerance - treatment differs

What to know about rapini
Rapini is sold as broccoli rabe and it is not broccoli. It is Brassica rapa, the same species as the turnip, and the small buds are flowering shoots rather than a broccoli crown. That matters for anyone tracking triggers, because rapini carries the fermentable-carbohydrate profile of a turnip top: moderate fructans, a moderate overall FODMAP score and a poor low-fermentation rating. It is the brassica leaf most likely to bloat an IBS or SIBO gut. Everything else on the page is quiet, with no histamine, no gluten, no nightshade, no free glutamate and only borderline salicylate and oxalate. The bitterness people either love or fight is glucosinolates, and blanching genuinely takes the edge off.
Watch for
- Moderate fructans, which is the single trigger worth planning around here and the reason a whole bunch eaten in one sitting causes gas and distension
- Scores poorly on low-fermentation SIBO criteria, since the buds and hollow stems are the parts that ferment hardest
- A mild excess-fructose grade on top of the fructans, so the two stack in a large portion in a way neither would alone
- Blanching in a large volume of water and draining it strips much of the bitterness, and fructans are water soluble, so the blanching water carries some of the load away with it
- The standard Italian American treatment is garlic and chilli in oil, and the garlic is a far heavier fructan dose than the rapini it is cooked with
