Sensitivity notes

Why oxalates food checker matters

Oxalates are compounds found in many plant foods that can bind with calcium to form crystals. High oxalate intake may contribute to kidney stones in susceptible individuals and can cause other symptoms in those with oxalate sensitivity.

  • Stay well-hydrated to help prevent oxalate crystal formation
  • Pair high-oxalate foods with calcium-rich foods to bind oxalates
  • Cooking and boiling can reduce oxalate content in some foods
  • Spread oxalate intake throughout the day rather than one large dose
  • Consider probiotics - some gut bacteria break down oxalates

Ingredient notes

What to know about relish

Relish is a broad category of chopped, pickled or cooked vegetables in a tangy vinegar base, and most jarred versions are built on onion, which makes them high FODMAP. Fructans are graded D, so relish is a frequent gut trigger, and because the vegetables are pickled or fermented it also carries moderate histamine and tyramine. If it is specifically cucumber based, see our pickle relish page for the detail.

Watch for

  • High in fructans (grade D), usually from onion and other alliums in the mix, so most relishes are not low FODMAP
  • Moderate histamine and tyramine because the vegetables are pickled or fermented, a factor if amines set you off
  • Vinegar and salt heavy, which is why relish also scores poorly for the DASH and Mediterranean patterns
