Ingredient notes

What to know about kiwano

Kiwano is the spiked orange fruit with lime green jelly inside, and the single most useful fact about it is botanical: it is Cucumis metuliferus, the same genus as cucumber and as cantaloupe and honeydew melon. That places it squarely in the gourd family, which decides most of what follows. Its trigger row is calm. Kiwano grades A for histamine content, tyramine, nickel, gluten, lactose, dairy protein, free glutamates, sulfites, nitrites and nightshades, with mild B grades for histamine liberation, salicylates and oxalates. The FODMAP block is unrated, and here that genuinely means unknown rather than "probably fine", because its two nearest relatives point in opposite directions: cucumber grades B for FODMAPs while honeydew melon grades D for FODMAPs and D for excess fructose. Kiwano is also unusually watery and low in sugar for a fruit, which is why it turns up on blood sugar friendly fruit lists. The two things actually worth watching are gourd family issues rather than chemistry: melon and cucumber are classic culprits in ragweed linked oral allergy syndrome, and any cucurbit that tastes strongly bitter should be spat out rather than eaten.

Watch for

  • If melon or cucumber makes your mouth or throat itch during hay fever season, kiwano is in the same genus and can do the same thing.Pollen food allergy syndrome to ragweed classically involves melon, cucumber and banana, and kiwano sits with the first two rather than escaping them
  • Bitterness is a stop signal in this family.Gourds can produce cucurbitacins, and severely bitter cucumbers, courgettes and squashes have caused real poisonings with vomiting and diarrhoea. Ripe kiwano should taste mild and faintly cucumber like with a citrus edge. If a mouthful is harshly bitter, do not eat the rest
  • FODMAP grades are unrated.Unlike most gaps this one cannot be filled by looking at relatives, because cucumber grades B and honeydew melon grades D for both FODMAPs and excess fructose. Treat kiwano as untested and log a trial portion
  • The seeds are swallowed with the pulp and are essentially insoluble fibre, in the same way passion fruit seeds are.Scooping out two or three fruits in one sitting is a meaningful fibre load even though nothing in the chemistry columns flags
