Why fructans food checker matters
Fructans are chains of fructose molecules found in wheat, onions, garlic, and many other foods. They're a type of FODMAP that can cause digestive symptoms in sensitive individuals because they're not well absorbed in the small intestine.
- Garlic-infused oil is low-FODMAP since fructans don't dissolve in oil
- Green parts of leeks and scallions are lower in fructans
- Sourdough bread may be better tolerated than regular wheat bread
- Spelt and ancient grains still contain fructans despite marketing claims
- Portion size matters - small amounts may be tolerable

What to know about limequat
Limequat is a deliberate cross between a key lime and a kumquat, bred in Florida in 1909, and it inherits the most useful trait of the kumquat side: the peel is sweet and thin enough to eat, so the whole fruit goes in rather than just the juice. That changes the exposure profile compared with a lime. Peel is where citrus essential oils and most of the flavonoids sit, so eating a limequat whole delivers considerably more of those compounds and considerably less acid per bite than squeezing a lime would.
Watch for
- Its histamine liberation grade of B sits well below lemon and lime, both graded D in this dataset.Limequat is half lime, so treat the gentler grade as unconfirmed rather than as evidence that it behaves differently. If citrus is a known trigger, test it deliberately.
- Graded mild on FODMAPs and excess fructose. The fruits are small and usually eaten one or two at a time, which keeps the load low, but marmalades and preserves concentrate both.
- You are eating the peel, which means you are eating whatever was sprayed on it.Unwaxed or scrubbed fruit is worth seeking out here in a way it is not for a fruit you peel.
- Citrus peel oil is a recognised contact irritant, and limonene is a common sensitiser in people who handle a lot of fruit. This is a skin issue rather than a gut one.
- The salicylate grade is mild rather than clean, and citrus peel generally runs higher in salicylates than citrus flesh.Whole fruit eating puts you on the higher side of that.
