Why fructans food checker matters

Fructans are chains of fructose molecules found in wheat, onions, garlic, and many other foods. They're a type of FODMAP that can cause digestive symptoms in sensitive individuals because they're not well absorbed in the small intestine.

  • Garlic-infused oil is low-FODMAP since fructans don't dissolve in oil
  • Green parts of leeks and scallions are lower in fructans
  • Sourdough bread may be better tolerated than regular wheat bread
  • Spelt and ancient grains still contain fructans despite marketing claims
  • Portion size matters - small amounts may be tolerable

What to know about hemp hearts

Hemp hearts are hemp seeds with the shell removed, soft enough to eat raw by the spoonful over yoghurt or salad. As a trigger food they are unusually quiet: clean on histamine, histamine liberation, gluten, lactose, dairy protein, sulfite, tyramine and caffeine, and only mild on FODMAPs and salicylate. Two grades are worth knowing about. Nickel is high, which is the standard picture for seeds, and oxalate is moderate. Hemp is also botanically neither a tree nut nor a peanut, so it clears most nut allergy protocols, and the recurring drug test worry has a more reassuring answer than the internet suggests.

Watch for

  • High in nickel, the one real flag on this food.Seeds concentrate nickel, and hulling removes the shell so what is left is the mineral-dense kernel
  • Moderate oxalate, graded a step above whole hemp seed here, which fits the same logic: strip the hull and you concentrate the kernel
  • Mild FODMAP load rather than none.Hemp hearts get eaten by the handful because they taste like nothing, and two or three heaped tablespoons is a different dose from a sprinkle
  • Not a nut, but often packed alongside them.If your reaction is to a tree nut or sesame, the question is the facility rather than the hemp, so check the may-contain line
  • Buy them cold and use them up.The oil in hemp hearts is highly unsaturated and goes rancid quickly at room temperature, and rancid seeds taste bitter and sit badly
