Sensitivity notes

Why dairy proteins food checker matters

Dairy proteins (casein and whey) can cause reactions in people with milk protein allergy or intolerance. This is different from lactose intolerance and can cause both digestive and systemic symptoms.

  • Dairy protein allergy requires complete dairy avoidance
  • Casein and whey are the main proteins to avoid
  • 'Non-dairy' products may still contain casein
  • Ghee may be tolerated as proteins are removed
  • This is different from lactose intolerance - treatment differs

What to know about garbanzo beans

Garbanzo beans, better known as chickpeas, are high-FODMAP but their trigger profile is different from kidney or black beans: they are high in both fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), a double oligosaccharide hit that ferments in the gut. The good news is they are otherwise clean, low in histamine, salicylate, oxalate and nickel, and a small canned-and-rinsed portion (about a 1/4 cup) is actually low-FODMAP.

Watch for

  • High in fructans as well as GOS, so chickpeas carry two fermentable FODMAPs where most beans mainly carry GOS, which can mean more gas and bloating
  • A small canned, drained and rinsed portion (roughly 1/4 cup) is low-FODMAP; the trouble starts with larger servings and with dishes that pile them on
  • Hummus stacks the odds: the chickpeas bring fructans and GOS, and the garlic adds still more fructans, so hummus is often less tolerated than a measured portion of plain chickpeas
