Why fodmaps food checker matters
FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that can cause digestive distress in sensitive individuals. They include fructose, lactose, fructans, galactans, and polyols. These sugars are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and ferment in the colon, potentially causing bloating, gas, and discomfort.
- Start with a 2-6 week elimination phase, removing all high-FODMAP foods
- Keep a detailed food and symptom diary to track your reactions
- Reintroduce one FODMAP group at a time to identify your specific triggers

Serving size, prep, and portion notes for garbanzo beans
Garbanzo beans, better known as chickpeas, are high-FODMAP but their trigger profile is different from kidney or black beans: they are high in both fructans and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), a double oligosaccharide hit that ferments in the gut. The good news is they are otherwise clean, low in histamine, salicylate, oxalate and nickel, and a small canned-and-rinsed portion (about a 1/4 cup) is actually low-FODMAP.
Watch for
High in fructans as well as GOS, so chickpeas carry two fermentable FODMAPs where most beans mainly carry GOS, which can mean more gas and bloating / A small canned, drained and rinsed portion (roughly 1/4 cup) is low-FODMAP; the trouble starts with larger servings and with dishes that pile them on / Hummus stacks the odds: the chickpeas bring fructans and GOS, and the garlic adds still more fructans, so hummus is often less tolerated than a measured portion of plain chickpeas
