What to know about cannellini beans
Cannellini beans are the creamy white Italian kidney bean at the heart of dishes like pasta e fagioli and Tuscan ribollita. Their one real drawback is FODMAPs: they are very high in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), so a normal serving reliably produces gas and bloating and sits poorly with SIBO. What sets them apart from most other white beans is how clean they are on everything else, testing low on nickel, oxalate and salicylate, so if beans bother you it is almost certainly the FODMAP load rather than any of those secondary triggers.
Watch for
- Very high in galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), the top FODMAP driver in beans, so a standard portion commonly causes gas, bloating and discomfort
- A poor choice during a SIBO flare because that same fermentable GOS feeds small-intestinal bacteria
- Unlike navy beans and many other white beans, cannellini stay low on nickel, oxalate and salicylate, so those triggers are not the issue here
