Why vegan diet checker matters
A vegan diet excludes all animal products including meat, dairy, eggs, and honey. It focuses on plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
- Ensure adequate protein from varied plant sources
- Supplement B12 - it's essential and not available from plants
- Consider omega-3 from algae-based supplements
- Iron from plants requires vitamin C for better absorption
- Plan meals to ensure complete amino acid profiles

What to know about perch
Perch is the classic panfish of European and North American fresh water, yellow perch in the Great Lakes and European perch across the rivers and lakes of Europe, and it is one of the calmer fish in our data on the triggers people usually worry about. Histamine A, tyramine A, no histamine liberation on record, no gluten, no lactose, no FODMAPs, no nickel, no sulfites, no nitrites. Two flags sit against it: our data grades perch moderate for both salicylate and oxalate. Those are plant chemistries and a plain white fillet is not a plant, so treat the rating as a conservative one rather than evidence that perch is loaded, but log a portion if you are counting either strictly rather than assuming it is a free food. The more useful caution for most people is that perch almost never arrives plain. It is the fish of the Friday fish fry, which means flour, breadcrumb or beer batter, and it is very often a fish somebody caught themselves, which brings freshwater contaminant advisories into the picture in a way that supermarket cod never does.
Watch for
- Graded moderate for salicylate and moderate for oxalate in our data, the only two chemistry flags perch carries. If you run a strict salicylate or oxalate count, log the portion rather than treating fish as an automatic zero
- Perch is a fish-fry fish.Floured, breadcrumbed or beer-battered perch adds wheat gluten and fructans, and fry seasonings lean on paprika, onion powder and garlic powder, none of which appear on the fish own record
- Locally caught perch carries advisories that shop-bought sea fish does not.In the 2023 EWG survey of US freshwater fillets, the single most PFAS-contaminated sample was a yellow perch from Lake Erie, and PCB and mercury advisories apply to many inland waters. Check the advisory for the water it came from
- The clean histamine grade assumes fresh fish.Panfish are often held on a stringer or in a live well for hours before cleaning, and in warm weather that is exactly when amines start to build
- Ocean perch is not this fish.On a menu or a freezer box it almost always means a redfish from the Sebastes genus, which belongs with our rockfish entry rather than here
