Serving size, prep, and portion notes for tilapia

Tilapia is one of the quietest proteins on the whole trigger chart. It grades A for histamine, histamine liberation, tyramine, salicylates, oxalate, nickel, free glutamate, sulfites, gluten, lactose and nightshades, which is why it turns up so often as the fallback fish during an elimination phase. It is farmed, cheap, almost flavourless and it does not fight with anything. The honest caveat is nutritional rather than reactive: farmed tilapia is a lean fish raised largely on grain-based feed, so it delivers very little EPA and DHA compared with oily fish, and its omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is the standing criticism of it. If you eat fish partly for the omega-3s, tilapia is a safe plate but not a productive one, so rotate it with something oilier.

Watch for

The clean grades describe a plain fillet. Breaded tilapia, fish sticks and beer-battered versions bring wheat and are a different food entirely on the gluten column / Blackening and cajun rubs are built on paprika and cayenne, so a seasoned fillet carries a nightshade load the fish itself does not have. Pan sauces add garlic and butter on top / Histamine in fish is a storage question rather than a species question. Tilapia is lean white flesh at the forgiving end of that risk, but a fillet that has been thawed, sat warm and refrozen is no longer the low-histamine food the grade describes / Clean on every FODMAP group. The fish carries no fermentable carbohydrate of its own, so watch the pan and the marinade rather than the fillet / Farmed source matters for flavour and fat profile more than for triggers, and the muddy taste people complain about comes from the pond rather than from anything you would react to
