What to know about marionberry
Marionberry is the flagship Oregon blackberry, a 1956 cross of Chehalem and Olallie that growers still call the cabernet of blackberries for its dark, winey concentration. That intensity shows up in the trigger data too: marionberry is high FODMAP, high in polyols (the sorbitol group), and graded poorly for SIBO fermentation. Where it differs from a supermarket blackberry is salicylates. Marionberry sits at moderate rather than high, so if one bad blackberry made you write off every bramble, the culprit may not be the one you assumed. It does carry a moderate histamine grade, which most fresh berries do not.
Watch for
- High in polyols.A full cup of marionberries carries a real sorbitol dose, and sorbitol is the usual reason fruit produces gas, cramping or loose stools an hour or two later rather than immediately
- High FODMAP overall with a modest amount of free fructose on top, and graded poorly for SIBO, so it behaves like a portion-controlled fruit rather than a snack-bowl fruit
- Moderate on salicylates, a full grade gentler than a plain blackberry.If you cut brambles after a salicylate reaction, marionberry is a reasonable one to retest carefully
- Graded moderate for histamine content, unusual among fresh berries.Not a problem for most people, but it matters during a strict low-histamine elimination phase
- You rarely meet marionberry fresh.It reaches most people as jam, pie filling, syrup or an ice cream ripple, where the fruit has been cooked down and the polyol load per spoonful is higher than the fresh berry suggests
