Sensitivity notes

Why aip diet checker matters

The Paleo Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) is an elimination diet designed to reduce inflammation and heal the gut in people with autoimmune conditions. It removes grains, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, and nightshades during the elimination phase.

  • Elimination phase removes all potentially inflammatory foods
  • Focus on nutrient-dense foods: organ meats, bone broth, vegetables
  • Reintroduce foods one at a time after 30-90 days
  • Sleep, stress management, and movement are part of the protocol
  • Work with a practitioner experienced in autoimmune protocols

What to know about papaya

Papaya is a low-FODMAP, strongly anti-inflammatory tropical fruit, but it is a notable histamine liberator, meaning it can prompt your body to release its own histamine and cause itching, flushing or hives even though the fruit itself is low in histamine. It also contains papain, a protein-digesting enzyme that is linked to oral itching and tingling and to latex-fruit cross-reactivity. That enzyme angle, more than sugar or fiber, is why papaya bothers some people.

Watch for

  • Histamine liberator, so it can set off itching, flushing, hives or headache even though papaya is low in histamine itself
  • Contains papain, a proteolytic enzyme that can cause a tingling or itchy mouth and cross-reacts in people with latex-fruit syndrome
  • Unripe or green papaya has more papain and latex, so it tends to be more reactive than fully ripe fruit
  • Low FODMAP in a normal serve and strongly anti-inflammatory, so the gut is rarely the problem here
