Why lectin food checker matters

Lectins are proteins found in many plant foods, especially legumes and grains. Some people follow low-lectin diets believing they reduce inflammation and digestive issues, though properly cooked foods have reduced lectin content.

  • Proper cooking destroys most lectins - never eat raw beans
  • Pressure cooking is highly effective at reducing lectins
  • Peeling and deseeding reduces lectin content
  • Fermentation can reduce lectins in some foods
  • Sprouting may increase or decrease lectins depending on the food

What to know about smoothie

Do smoothies cause bloating, and does blending remove FODMAPs? A smoothie is only as gentle as what goes in it, and the catch is concentration: blending several fruits into one glass stacks fructose, fructans, polyols and oxalate that you would rarely eat whole in a single sitting. Blending breaks the cells but leaves every FODMAP molecule intact.

Watch for

  • Blending does not remove FODMAPs: it breaks up cells but the fructose, fructans and polyols stay in the glass, so a smoothie is not gentler than the whole fruit
  • Stacking works against you: one smoothie can blend several fruits at once, concentrating a moderate FODMAP, salicylate and oxalate load you would not eat whole in one sitting
  • Depending on the mix it can also carry moderate histamine and tyramine, especially from banana, citrus or blended fruit left to sit
  • As a sweet, fruit-heavy drink it rates poorly for SIBO; portion and single-fruit control are what bring it back down
