Serving size, prep, and portion notes for apple juice
Apple juice is one of the most reliable FODMAP triggers there is. Juicing strips out the fibre and concentrates the sugars, so you get a big hit of excess fructose plus sorbitol with nothing to slow it down. It is a very common cause of bloating, gas and diarrhoea, and in young children it is a well-known reason for loose stools, sometimes called toddler’s diarrhoea.
Watch for
Very high in excess fructose, with more fructose than glucose, which the small intestine absorbs poorly and which pulls water into the gut / Also high in sorbitol, so it hits two FODMAP pathways at once and is far harder to tolerate than a whole apple / No fibre left to buffer the sugar load, making it a poor choice for SIBO and for low-FODMAP or DASH eating / Commercial apple juice can contain added sulfites as a preservative, a separate trigger for sulfite-sensitive people
