Why fructans food checker matters
Fructans are chains of fructose molecules found in wheat, onions, garlic, and many other foods. They're a type of FODMAP that can cause digestive symptoms in sensitive individuals because they're not well absorbed in the small intestine.
- Garlic-infused oil is low-FODMAP since fructans don't dissolve in oil
- Green parts of leeks and scallions are lower in fructans
- Sourdough bread may be better tolerated than regular wheat bread
- Spelt and ancient grains still contain fructans despite marketing claims
- Portion size matters - small amounts may be tolerable

What to know about yardlong beans
Yardlong beans are botanically a cowpea, the same species as the black-eyed pea, but they are picked young and eaten as a limp half-metre pod instead of being dried into a pulse. That harvest timing is the whole story for anyone tracking FODMAPs. Dried cowpeas grade high on total FODMAPs and galacto-oligosaccharides; the yardlong pod grades B for total FODMAPs, A for fructans and only C for GOS, which puts it much closer to a green bean than to a bowl of dal. It is clean on gluten, lactose, dairy protein, sulfites, nitrites, nightshades and lectins, and everything else that is not clean sits at a mild B: histamine, salicylate, oxalate, tyramine, nickel, free glutamate and SIBO fermentation. There is no dramatic trigger here, just a moderate legume sugar that scales with how much of the stir fry was beans.
Watch for
- Galacto-oligosaccharides grade C, the one genuinely portion-dependent thing about it.A side of long beans is mild, a plate where they are the bulk of the dish is not
- It is still a legume pod, so it is not equivalent to a common green bean, which grades clean on GOS.If you tolerate green beans but not these, that difference is the likely reason
- Restaurant preparations carry the additives, not the bean.Dry-fried long beans usually arrive with fermented black bean, preserved mustard green, oyster sauce, garlic and chilli, which bring glutamate, histamine and fructans that the pod itself does not have
- Mild across the board otherwise: histamine, salicylate, oxalate, tyramine and nickel all grade B, so it is unlikely to be your headline trigger even if it shows up on a bad day
